As earlier mentioned, most batteries are supposed to have at least 4 years life span, however, due to POOR INSTALLATIONS and OPERATIONAL USAGE which tend to reduce the battery’s life span to the range of 6 months – 1 year.
Operational Usage: Continuous charging without depleting the battery’s power will either damage it or reduce its life span by 50%. Kindly discharge your battery
Good Installations: Battery installers must have the following in mind before & after installations;
• Load Capacity: what is the expected Amperage from the battery bank to power the facility or apartment? Cabling sizes, battery connections (Series, Parallel or series Parallel) are key factors.
a. Cabling Size – The cables that join your batteries together play a vital role in the performance of any battery bank installations. Using correct size (diameter) and length of cable is important for overall efficiency and life span of your batteries. Cables that are too small or unnecessarily long will result in power loss and increased resistance, also connecting batteries in series, parallel or series/parallel the cables between each battery should be of equal length.
Please note that if your cables are equal in length as mentioned above this will enable all batteries in the system work equally at same volts, amperage and resistance. Unfortunately, the most common installation error is using under-sized cables to the load(s).
Good installation is primarily using the correct size of cables to match its task, as well as using correct tools to attach terminals, and providing adequate over-current protection with fuses and circuit breakers.
b. Connection: Inverters and Solar systems are working for the common goal of providing power with one major source of connection (cable) to supply the power to operate To and Fro Batteries.
I. Series Connection: Wiring batteries together in series will increase the voltage while keeping the amp hour capacity the same. For example; 2 x 12V 200Ah batteries wired in series will give you 24V, while your Amps remain constant 200Ah capacity.
II. Parallel Connection: Wiring batteries together in parallel has the effect of doubling capacity while keeping the voltage the same. For example; 2 x 12V 200Ah batteries wired in parallel will give you only 12V, but increases capacity to 400Ah.
III. Series/Parallel Connection: This is a combination of the above methods and is used for 2v or 12v batteries to achieve both a higher system voltage and capacity. For example; 4 x 12V 200Ah batteries wired in series/parallel will give you 12V at 400Ah. 4 x 12V 200Ah batteries can be wired in series /parallel to give you 24V with 400Ah capacity.
c. Temperature: Different temperatures affect the internal chemical reaction rates, and internal resistance and efficiency of all types of batteries. Note: Batteries operation above 50degrees and below 10degrees are not recommended.
I. Batteries significantly decrease charging time within 25- 35 degrees.
II. Batteries efficiency decrease within 35 – 50 degrees.
III. Batteries life span is shortened at higher working temperatures 35 – 50 degrees.
