How to deliver a Breech presenting Baby

Breech presentation is when the baby comes with the buttock or legs inside the womb. The normal presentation is for the baby to come with the head (cephalic).

There are many ways by which a breech can be delivered.

1. The baby can be delivered vaginally (naturally) by assisting the delivery as the baby comes out during labour (ASSISTED BREECH DELIVERY)

2. The whole process of breech delivery can be completely taken over with the breech being pulled out from inside the womb (BREECH EXTRACTION)

3. The breech presenting baby can be delivered by Caesarean section (CS).
In modern practice, CS is the safest mode of delivery for most breech. It reduces complications for both mothers and babies. Possible common complications include fractures, nerve injuries, birth asphyxia, maternal injuries, and neonatal (baby’s) death.

It is still possible to allow a woman to have vaginal (natural) breech delivery but some strict criteria must be followed to get a good outcome. In essence, CS is the modern preferred mode of delivery for breech-presenting babies.
