Chess and Checkers Board

Kunjani,

That is a way of asking in Zulu language of South Africa, how do you do? It’s been a while that I came your way with Versus Series. Trust the first month of 2018 is ending on a high side? Let’s aim to sustain the tempo of our achievements so that the year would end greatly.

Yes! Some generations ago, men usually seat under the tree in the evening to play checkers (usually called draughts) while some associates would be cheering the players to victory. Then, we saw chess come on the scene, children of elites embraced it. Interestingly, both games are played indoor and on the light and dark squares board. Let’s think together on Chess vs Checkers with explanations from my Guest co-writer who is a Sports enthusiast, a photographer and an accountant, Olugbenga Irantiola.

Chess is a simulation of war with a battalion defending a territory, the techniques deployed is to edge out the enemies, the objective of the moves is to checkmate the other army. There are different values for each ‘soldier’ within the army, as such, they make different moves. The way in which the player handles each of the officers is very important. It is a mentally tasking game.

Checkers (draughts) is a game in which the primary objective of the pawns that makes all similar moves is to capture each of the opponent’s pieces by jumping one’s own pieces over the opponent’s pieces. The size of checkers board varies- some are 8×8, 10×10 and 12×12. The singular movement of pawn is only diagonally into an unoccupied square.

It is worthy of note that the way in which the pawns of the two games work differs. When the pawn of a chess reaches the farthest part of the board; it gets promoted to any of the senior army officers but not necessarily a King; whereas when a pawn of checkers does the same, it becomes a king, this is marked by placing an additional piece on top of the first man, and acquires additional powers including the ability to move backwards and (in variants in which they cannot already do so) capture backwards.

What is the lesson of today’s discussion, similarities do not necessarily mean equally! If you are seeing similar situations with others; you may need to apply a different strategy. Don’t assume that the same ideology covers it all.

I urge you to handle the rest of the year creatively and ensure that you do not give up till you are promoted as a senior officer or as a King.

Cheers!

Olutayo
