The centenary celebration of the exodus of Okeho indigenes from Okeho Ahoro to Okeho Ile opened with pomp today. The epoch making event kicked off at the palace of the Onjo of Okeho, Oba Rafiu Osuolale Mustapha (Adeitan II).
The centenary celebration is premised on the forceful eviction of Okeho indigenes by Captain Ross from the old location, Okeho Ahoro, to Okeho Ile. This celebration was important to celebrate the joyful coexistence of the community at the present location without threat from internal or external sources.
While declaring the celebration open, the Onjo of Okeho, Oba Rafiu Osuolale Mustapha (Adeitan II) gave an insight to the visitors about how the confederation, Okeho, came into being as a result of the tribulations from the Fulanis and Dahomey invaders till the town became united against all forms of aggressions.
The Kabiyesi praised the monarchs that had reigned in the town from the reign Onjo Layiwola Obatumo, the king that led the town to this current location and other Kings such as Onjo Ladokun, Onjo Ereola, Onjo Yakubu Sunmonu. The Kabiyesi equally commended the eminent indigenes of the town across corporate, academic and social Nigeria who had been supportive to the growth of the town.
Thereafter, the Chairman of the Egbe Omo Ibile Okeho, Alh. Azeez Lakanla and the Chairman, Centenary Planning Committee, Mr. Moyo Ajekigbe, OFR, welcomed everybody to the celebration which will span for the next eight days.
The foundation of the centenary arcade was laid opposite the Police Station, Okeho in commemoration of the event and everyone was entertained by the Cultural Gelede Chanter, Racheal Gelede and other creative groups in the town.
Eminent Okeho indigenes at the event include- Professor Segun Gbadegesin, Asiwaju of Okeho; Chief Bayande Ayanlowo; Barr. Abel Olaore; Pa Gbade Adejumo; Dr. Razak Afolabi Olopoenia and others.
Other activities slated for the centenary include visit to the old site, cultural display, peoples’ parliament, football match, lecture, symposium, merit awards and conferment of chieftaincy tittles on worthy indigenes. On the final day of the celebration (October 28, 2017), a book Okeho in History by Professor Segun Gbadegesin, the Asiwaju of Okeho would be launched. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the Chief Launcher. Other dignitaries expected at the occasion include Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, former governor of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and Minister of Communications, Alhaji Adebayo Shittu
